Drive times are approximate, from the cabins, and mountain roads run slow.

The Roan Highlands, Watauga Lake, Grandfather Mountain, the Blue Ridge Parkway, and the High Country ski towns are all within about an hour of the cabins. Fly into Tri-Cities (TRI, under an hour away) or Asheville (AVL, about 1 hr 45 min).

Roan Mountain

The high balds above the hollow

Roan Mountain rises to 6,285 feet, with grassy balds, Fraser fir, and the world’s largest natural rhododendron gardens. Start at Carvers Gap, about 35–40 min up Hwy 143.

Carvers Gap → Round Bald

The classic easy walk on the Appalachian Trail from the TN/NC line (5,512′). Parking is limited and enforced, so arrive early and bring a wind layer.

Jane Bald & Grassy Ridge

Longer ridge miles and fewer crowds.

Rhododendron Gardens

Short paths and boardwalks. Peak bloom is mid-to-late June.

Roan Mountain State Park

Public access on the Doe River Fishing Trail starts about 10–20 minutes away. The Watauga tailwater below Wilbur Dam is about 30 minutes. Ask about private river access at the Watauga River House.
