The Stay

Misty Hollow — two cabins, one mountain meadow

We’ve made Misty Hollow home: two private log cabins tucked into a wooded hollow on Roan Mountain, ringed by open meadow, a creek-side path with string lights, and the kind of quiet that makes porch coffee last longer than it should. Book one cabin or both.

One cabin opens onto a wide deck with grill, hot tub, and hammock under the trees. The other greets you with a stone path, covered porch swing, and forested hillside. Inside: soaring wood ceilings, stone fireplace, full kitchens, loft sleeping, and a clawfoot tub for after the trail.

What's Included

Built for anglers, hikers & quiet seekers

Mountain meadow setting

Open grass clearing ringed by hardwood timber — deer and wild turkeys on the edges, stars when the clouds lift.

~5 min to trout water

The Doe, the Watauga, and several small mountain creeks sit a short drive from the cabins.

In Roan’s shadow

Carvers Gap, the rhododendron gardens, and Roan Mountain State Park are your backyard high country.

Two private log cabins

Book one for a couple’s escape or both for family and friends — separate porches, decks, and meadow between you.

Deck, grill & hot tub

Outdoor dining under the trees, a grill for the day’s catch, and a hot tub when the mountain air turns cool.

Creek path & string lights

A wooden bridge over the hollow creek leads toward the meadow gate — moss, ferns, and evening lights along the rail.

The Setting

Meadow, timber, and a mountain at your shoulder

Misty Hollow sits on Roan Mountain — far enough from town for true quiet, close enough that trout water, groceries, and a covered-bridge dinner in Elizabethton are easy day pieces.

The Trout Trail

Cold water on every side of the hollow

Stocked every two weeks Feb–June and holding wild browns. The Doe River Fishing Trail — public access along Hwy 19E — starts essentially in your neighborhood.

The Watauga

Blue-ribbon water from Wilbur Dam to Boone Lake — roughly 6,000 trout per mile, browns that regularly top 20 inches.

Hollow water

Mountain creeks

Several small freestone creeks within a five-minute drive hold wild rainbows and the occasional brook trout.

Carvers Gap scenic overlook

One of the great pull-offs of the Southern Appalachians. Carvers Gap sits on the Tennessee–North Carolina line along Hwy 143 / NC 261 — open sky, wind on the grass, and the start of the balds walk. From Misty Hollow it’s a short climb up the mountain road.

  • The overlook itself

Park at the gap and step into highland air. On a clear day you read ridgelines into two states without a trail step.

  • 1

    Round Bald (easy classic)

Follow the A.T. north onto Round Bald — open grassy summit and the view that sells the mountain.

  • 2

    Jane Bald & Grassy Ridge

Longer ridge miles and fewer crowds. Pack a wind layer — often 10–20° cooler than the hollow.

  • 3

    Pair with the gardens

Combine with Rhododendron Gardens (mid–late June) or a morning on the Doe at the state park.
